India Today investigation

India Today investigation: On July 1, India Today’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), in an exclusive report, exposed how the duo tried to infiltrate the Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajasthan using their contacts in the party’s Minority Morcha.

The barbaric murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan’s Udaipur has sent shockwaves across the nation. Riyaz Attari and Mohammad Ghaus, the two accused, were arrested soon after.

On July 1, India Today’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) in an exclusive report exposed how the duo tried to infiltrate the Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajasthan using their contacts in the party’s Minority Morcha. The probe found several photographs that showed Attari alongside local BJP members. He also attended several party events.

However, following this report, many on social media started claiming based on screenshots of the India Today report that the murderers were members of the saffron party. “Udaipur murderer is from BJP. I’m not even surprised,” one person wrote on Facebook.

Senior Congress leader and former MP Renuka Chowdhury also made a similar claim on Twitter. “BJP Minority Cell accepts murderer Riyaz is a BJP karyakarta,” her post announced. The graphic Chowdhury tweeted has been shared by many across social media platforms.

Nowhere in the India Today report does it say that they were BJP members. India Today’s report, based on the confession of one of his acquaintances, was able to confirm that Riyaz Attari was present at some local BJP events. India Today, however, never confirmed his affiliation to the party. Hence, the viral social media claims can’t be attributed to the India Today report.

Whether Riyaz Attari ever formally joined the party in the past is a matter of further investigation — the India Today report has not delved into this matter. WHAT DOES THE STORY SAY?

According to the report, Attari attended several local BJP programs, sometimes even uninvited. India Today found images that supported this claim on social media.

Unheeded warnings, muddled intelligence: Story of violent Agnipath protests in Bihar

Uploaded from the account of a person called Mohammad Tahir back in 2019, these photos also tagged another man called Irshad Chainwala.

WHO ARE THESE MEN?

Chainwala is a member of the BJP Minority Morcha’s Rajasthan unit. A Udaipur resident who has been a BJP member for over a decade now, Chainwala has admitted that Attari used to attend the party’s events.

Mohammad Tahir, on the other hand, is the bridge between the saffron party and Attari, said Chainwala. He identified Tahir, who hails from Udaipur’s Savina, as “our worker,” and “close to Riyaz.”

ATTARI’S POLITICAL LEANING

Chainwala has flatly denied that Attari was a party member. He said that even though Attari had attended several events and programs featuring BJP leader Gulab Chand Kataria, he was not a party worker.

“He said he wanted to work with the party,” said Chainwala, adding that he was photographed garlanding Attari after the latter’s return from Umrah. The photo was uploaded to Facebook by Tahir, who is now untraceable.

India Today’s investigation found that Mohammad Tahir’s phone was switched off and his house in Savina had been vacated. He remains unreachable at the time of writing this report.

Chainwala, however, said that despite his presence at BJP events, Attari was a “harsh critic” of the party in private conversations with friends.

Thus, while it is clear that the Udaipur murder accused Riyaz Attari used to attend local BJP events, India Today’s investigation did not conclude on any certain terms that he was a member of the party. To claim his membership using India Today’s exclusive report is baseless.
