Deliberate attempts being made to create confusion against Apnipath scheme: Union minister

Amid widespread protests against the Agnipath recruitment model, Union minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday said deliberate attempts are being made to create confusion against a fabulous and far-sighted scheme. The minister also said that the scheme was rolled out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the unemployed youth after long and careful deliberations.

Agnipath will provide the youth an opportunity to get employed and also serve the nation. However, a deliberate attempt is being made to create confusion that the scheme will ruin the previous arrangement of recruitment in the armed forces, Singh told PTI. Allaying apprehensions of the youth, the minister of state in the prime minister’s office said the scheme should be seen as a supplementation to the recruitment process.

“The scheme provides unemployed youth an opportunity to serve in the armed forces for four years. Some of them will get permanent jobs (after four years) and those who are out, will get priority in other fields through finance and other support, he said on the sidelines of a function at Patnitop hill resort in his home constituency of Udhampur.

According to the latest update provided by Bihar police, a total of 780 miscreants have been arrested amid violence and arson in the state against the Agnipath recruitment scheme. A total of 138 FIRs have also been filed, police said.

A top military officer announced on Sunday that the Agnipath scheme will increase soldier recruitment to over one lakh in the future. He stated that the Centre will begin by recruiting 46,000 Army recruits to ‘analyze’ the scheme. “In the next 4-5 years, our intake (of soldiers) will be 50,000-60,000, with a subsequent increase to 90,000 – 1 lakh. We started small, with 46,000 people, to analyze the scheme…and to build up infra capacity “In a media briefing today, Additional Secretary Lt Gen Anil Puri, Department of Military Affairs (DMA), said. “Our intake of ‘Agniveers’ will go up to 1.25 lakhs shortly and will not remain at 46,000, which is the current figure,” he added.

Army, Navy, and Air Force announce broad schedule for recruitment under the Agnipath scheme

The Army-Navy and the Air Force on Sunday came out with a broad schedule for recruitment of soldiers under the Agnipath scheme while asserting that it is being implemented to bring down the age profile of the armed forces. Lt Gen A Puri, the additional secretary in the Department of Military Affairs, strongly defended the scheme, saying that reducing the age profile of the three services has been on the table for quite some time and even the Kargil review committee had made observations on it. At a press conference, Lt Gen Puri said the government was going ahead with implementing the Agnipath scheme and appealed to the youths to end their protest.

Giving details of the Navy’s plan to induct Agniveers under the scheme, Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi said the naval headquarters will come out with a broad guideline for the recruitment by June 25. The first batch of recruits will join the training program by November 21, he said. He said the Navy is recruiting both men and women as Agniveers under the scheme. About the Indian Air Force’s plan for induction of recruits under the Agnipath scheme, Air Marshall S K Jha said the registration process will start on June 24 and the process for online examination for phase one of the recruitment will begin on July 24.

“We are planning to start the training for the first batch of recruits by December 30,” Air Marshall Jha said. About the Army’s recruitment plan, Lt Gen Bansi Ponappa said the Army will issue a draft notification on Monday and subsequent notifications will be issued by various recruitment units of the force from July 1 onwards. Recruitment rallies under the Agnipath scheme will take place across India in August, September, and October, he said.

Lt Gen Ponappa said the first batch comprising 25,000 personnel will join the training program in the first and second week of December. A second lot of recruits will join their training around February 23. He said a total of 83 recruitment rallies will be organized across the country to select around 40,000 personnel.

The Indian Air Force on Sunday released the details of the Agnipath recruitment system the process of which will begin on June 2 to recruit youngsters into the military for four years. The defense ministry has already announced a 10% reservation for Agniveers while they will have the same quota in CAPF and the Assam Rifles under the Union home ministry. The announcements have been made in the wake of uproar against the scheme across the country.

A police vehicle was torched and two Uttar Pradesh Roadways buses were vandalized in Jaunpur as the agitation against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme spread in the state. Meanwhile, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers protested in Meerut over the issue. As many as 340 people have been arrested till now, including those who have been taken in custody as a preventive measure.

In Kannauj, youths staged a protest at Saurikh on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway demanding the withdrawal of the scheme. The number included 145 those who have been arrested as a preventive measure under Section 151 of the CrPC.

Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh has so far taken around 80 people in custody in connection with the violent protests in the district against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme, officials said on Saturday. Of those held since the protests on Friday, 35 people, including nine operators of coaching institutes, were arrested for their role in the violence, Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kalanidhi Naithani said.

In Bihar, violence and arson marked the fourth consecutive day of protests against Agnipath on Saturday when a state-wide bandh was also called by Army aspirants to press the demand for the rollback of the new system of recruitment in the armed forces. Police acted tough, arresting altogether 250 people across the state during the day and lodging 25 FIRs, according to a statement issued by the force here.

The statement also put the total number of arrests since Thursday at 718 and said more people would be rounded up after they are identified in a thorough examination of CCTV footage and videography done at various places.

The Centre, meanwhile, announced several incentives including a 10 percent reservation in vacancies in the defense ministry and paramilitary forces for Agnipath retirees as it tried to defuse the violent protests that raged on against the new military recruitment scheme in many states and the opposition parties stepped up pressure for a rollback.

Strongly defending the scheme, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said it was brought after wide-ranging consultations and suggested a “misunderstanding” was being spread for political reasons, while Union Minister Anurag Thakur appealed to the youths to shun violence and come forward for talks, asserting that the government is ready to look into their grievances with an open mind and make changes if required
